Sled Dog Racing Returns to Ely

A group of volunteers is bringing sled dog racing back to Ely. The Wolftrack Classic Sled Dog Race Committee has been meeting in Ely for months putting this together.

“We have secured trail permissions from the Ely Nordic Ski Club, the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club, and the DNR among others to organize two races scheduled for March 2, 2007,” said Wolftrack director Mary-Jane Caspers. “This is traditionally a slow time in Ely and would represent a welcome infusion of visitors into the city.”

There will be a 6 Class Dog Pro Race from Ely to Tower and an 8 Class Dog Pro Race from Ely to Tower and back on the same day. The races will begin at the Hidden Valley Ski Chalet in Ely and will follow the Tomahawk Trail and Taconite Trail through Superior National Forest and Bear Head Lake State Park on the way to Tower. Pre-Race events including vet checks, a spaghetti feed, and musher’s meetings on February 29 and March 1.

If you want to brush up on the history of sled dog racing in Ely, don’t miss the “Window Into Yesterday” Exhibit at the Ely Community Center during January and February. It is sponsored by the Ely-Winton Historical Society and features many fine photographs, brochures, and trophies Keep up with the Wolftrack Classic Sled Dog Race at www.wolftrackclassic.com
