Tall Ships Returning to Duluth

The enthusiastic response to the arrival of three Tall Ships in 2008 brought an estimated 125,000 folks to Duluth’s waterfront. This summer, a small flotilla of them will revisit Duluth. The long weekend of July 29 through Aug. 2 will see eight magnificent sailing vessels in Duluth for the Tall Ships Duluth 2010 festival.

It has been 36,525 days without a shipwreck, thanks to the Split Rock Lighthouse. To celebrate the 100 years of Split Rock Lighthouse this summer, events and activities will keep visitors coming back for more.

Mounties on the North Shore

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are coming to the Cross River Heritage Center in Schroder this summer—in paint, at least. Eight different paintings of the famous red-jacketed Canadian law enforcement officers created by Arnold Friberg will be on exhibit at the Cross River Heritage Center starting May 28. The opening reception is June 4 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Duluth Dragon Boats—Having Fun Raising Funds

The largest event of its kind in the Upper Midwest, Duluth’s Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is fun for participants, free for spectators and raises significant sums for local charities. Now in its ninth year, the festival has so far raised nearly $1 million for local communities.

April 22-25: Northern Sustainability and Simple Living Symposium

The North House Folk School in Grand Marais is adding a new weekend event to its annual lineup. The Northern Sustainability and Simple Living Symposium will have classes related to home energy efficiency, raising chickens, “green” medicines, alternative home construction, soap-making and furniture making. May 2: Gunflint Hosts Ham Run

Runners will gather on the Gunflint Trail for the third annual Ham Run half-marathon, going 13.1 miles from Gunflint Pines Resort on Gunflint Lake to Way of the Wilderness Outfitters/End of the Trail Campground. Most of the race route is within areas burned by the 2007 Ham Lake Fire. Also planned are the Ham Run 5K and Little Runts Run. For information, go to www.hamrunhalfmarathon.com.

May 7-8: Gunflint Green Up

Join fellow forest lovers on the Gunflint Trail to “release” previously planted conifer trees from competing vegetation during the third annual Gunflint Green Up. Removing other woody plants allows the conifers to have sunshine and more room to grow. The work in the woods will occur on the morning of Saturday, May 8 and participants will get a box lunch.

May 15-16:Dorion Plans Second Birding Fest

Birders will gather in the Ontario community of Dorion May 15-16 for the second annual Canyon Country Birding Festival. The two day festival is not only a fun social event for people who enjoy watching birds, but an opportunity to tour a surprising mix of habitats and see some outstanding scenery to boot.

May 15: Spring Superior Trail Race

The Superior Hiking trail makes a grueling route for the Superior Trail Race. The 25K and 50K runs go up and down (as goes the trail) btween Lutsen and Tofte. This year the Superior Trail Race was selected as the Ultra Championship Race by the Upper Midwest Trail Runners. New this year are two age classes for males and females—under 40 and over 40 with awards given to the top three finishers in each category. Headquarters for the event is Caribou Highlands. May 30:Thunder Bay Kite Festival

Held at Chippewa Park, the Kite Festival has been named “One of Ontario’s Top 50 Festivals” for four years in a row. First held in 1981, the Kite Festival is one of Thunder Bay’s favorite events. Spend an enjoyable day at the waterfront with family and friends. Activities include crafts, face painting, games and, of course, kite flying.

Duluth’s Freshwater Forest

Freshwater Forest, a new exhibit at the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth, offers something for all ages to discover and learn about the connections between human history, current uses of the forest, aquatic habitat and forest management. Freshwater Forest was developed in partnership between the Great Lakes Aquarium, Superior National Forests, the National Scenic Byways Program, and the Forest Service Urban Connections Program.
