Thunder Bay’s National Wonder
Canadians recently voted on-line for their top “Wonder of Canada” and the overwhelming #1 People’s Choice was the legendary land formation that stretches into Lake Superior--the Sleeping Giant.
The Sleeping Giant is actually the Sibley Peninsula, which juts out into the waters opposite Lake Superior’s largest city, Thunder Bay. This geological giant, composed of Mesoproterozoic Sibley Group of Sedimentary Rocks, dates back to 1.6 to 1.0 billion years ago. Over time, erosion resulted in the formation of five flat-topped mesas that, viewed from Thunder Bay, look like a giant human figure, arms folded on chest and lying on its back as if sleeping.
The on-line poll by Canada’s national radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) drew over one million votes during the website voting for the Seven Wonders of Canada. However, the poll was only one of six criteria used by CBC judges...and incredibly, the Sleeping Giant did not place in the final seven of the judged list.
But the Sleeping Giant was voted #1 by the people of Canada – and you can’t get any better than that.
