Single Track Times Ten on Pincushion Mountain

North Note-2
Cyclist takes on a winding stretch of single track.
Mountain biking enthusiasts, rejoice! With the Cook County board acting as fiscal agent, a Gunflint-area mountain biking club called Velo Marais (aka “Team Bike Swamp”) has been awarded a Federal Recreational Trails grant through the Minnesota DNR to lay down an additional 20 miles of single track on county land at Pincushion Mountain—meaning the available single track mileage on Pincushion will increase by nearly an order of magnitude.

Right now there are about 2.5 miles of intermediate-level single track within the Pincushion trail system. The new trails will vary in difficulty from beginner to expert level.

According to the Velo Marais website, Mark Spinler, club co-founder and co-owner of Superior North Outdoor Center and Bike Shop in Grand Marais, and the other club members “are spending every waking moment this summer sighting in trails to be ready for the Order of the Eagle Boy Scouts coming [in] 2011 to begin the trail building.” More information at www.superiornorthoutdoor.com.
