Delays should be expected, and MnDOT is recommending that residents use local streets to get around town. MnDOT is recommending travelers coming up from the Twin Cities consider avoiding the construction zone completely by choosing alternative routes through Duluth.

An official truck detour will be set up at the Midway Road exit to Highway 53.

For a scenic alternative, take Exit 195 to Askov (Highway 23) before they get to Duluth. Highway 23 is an official scenic byway and goes through charming small towns and Jay Cooke State Park. Travel through Fond du Lac and Gary-New Duluth, and hook up with Superior Street in West Duluth. That street can be followed all the way through Duluth to Highway 61.

There are lots of small construction projects on Highway 61 this summer, too, which will mean slower going from time to time, but only one major project is planned. Reconstruction of Highway 61 from the Split Rock River to Chapin’s Curve began in May. They’ll be putting in 10-foot shoulders and straightening out the worst curves. The project goes into the middle of next summer. Expect some delays, but access to Split Rock Lighthouse will be available at all times.
