McQuade Public Access wins National Award
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently received the “Large Access Outstanding Project Award” for the McQuade Public Access and Small Craft Harbor on Lake Superior. The award was presented at the annual States Organization for Boating Access (SOBA) Conference in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Visitation Up At State Parks
Following a busy summer season during which the number of occupied campsites increased nine percent over 2008, business continues to boom at Minnesota state parks, according to the Minnesota DNR. Vehicle permit sales for September 2009 were the highest on record, with sales of annual permits up 36 percent from September 2008 and sales of daily permits up 32 percent.

Gunflint Trail Designated as a National Scenic Byway
The Gunflint Trail received National Scenic Byway designation on Oct. 16. Known for winding its way through the Boundary Waters Wilderness east-west corridor, the Gunflint Trail is a historic roadway, dating back to the 1800’s with origins as a footpath for Native Americans and geological surveyors. The Gunflint Trail is a paved, 57-mile long two-lane roadway, which begins at Grand Marais, Minnesota and ends at Saganaga Lake on the Canadian border.

Driving a dog team, or "mushing" as it is known in the sport, is an activity that many people want to try. Being a child in the 1960’s, I had to wait until young adulthood, when I moved to Alaska, to learn about dog teams and raise and run my own team.
Since that time, there has been a resurgence of interest in dog teams and dog team racing. Viewing dog teams in action, or even reading about dog teams of the North, leads to fantasies of driving your own team through the boreal forest, along crystalline iced-over waterways. Your dog team glides silently across a frozen lake, with only the whisper of the sled runners and gentle pad of the dog’s paws on the hard trail.
