A changing of the guard is underway at Wintergreen Northern Wear in Ely. But if you don’t notice any sweeping changes, that’s fine by new owners Curt and Becky Stacey. Curt said their goal is to maintain Wintergreen’s integral role in the community while growing the business.
“Production will stay right here on Sheridan street while we expand such areas as internet marketing and group sales,” he said. “’Made in America’ products are becoming increasingly popular. Wintergreen’s role as one of the nation’s only full-line outdoor apparel manufacturers positions it perfectly to respond to that trend.”
Susan Schurke will continue part time as head product designer and assist with catalog production. One visible change is that the vacant Fisherman’s Headquarters building will soon be occupied. The International Wolf Center is leasing that space from the Staceys for the summer for their retail shop and some of their wildlife displays while repairs are made to the Wolf Center’s roof.
The Schurkes will operate Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge as a business entity separate from the Staceys’ Wintergreen Northern Wear, but the store and lodge will continue to be associated through cooperative marketing efforts. Wintergreen Northern Wear currently has about two dozen employees and independent contractors.
