After years of planning and work, the Gunflint Trail Historical Society will hold a grand opening for the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center on July 4.
Located at the end of the Gunflint Trail, Chik-Wauk Lodge operated as a resort overlooking Saganaga Lake for more than 40 years, beginning in 1934. This summer, the historic granite lodge will come back to life as a museum which tells the story of the Gunflint Trail through a variety of interactive displays focused on the region’s human and natural history. Museum highlights include video histories of Gunflint Trail characters, hands-on activities for children, and a cross section of a 300-year-old Gunflint Trail white pine. A network of interpretive trails crisscrosses the museum’s 50-acre grounds, including an ADA trail.
Chik-Wauk will be open to the public daily from 10 a.m.–5 p.m., July 4 through Oct. 17. To reach Chik-Wauk, drive 55 miles up the Gunflint Trail (Cook County Road 12) from Grand Marais and turn right on Moose Pond Drive (Cook County Road 81). Chik-Wauk is located ¼-mile in on Moose Pond Drive. More information about Chik-Wauk is available at www.chikwauk.com.
