The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon—a prequalifying race for the Iditarod—now includes a week’s worth of events. The race itself starts on Jan. 30 at a location yet to be determined. Mushers and their dog teams race an out-and-back route along the North Shore that totals nearly 400 miles. The race pays homage to John Beargrease (1858-1910) and his brothers, who for twenty years delivered the mail along an arduous route from Two Harbors to Grand Marais via dogsled, horse and canoe.
The 2011 festivities begin Jan. 28 with a gala dinner and auction with a speech by Iditarod champion Jeff King. On Jan. 29, proud puppy owners will gather at Fitger’s Inn & Brewery Complex in Duluth to show off their pooches for the Cutest Puppy Contest, with the winner to be chosen by spectators.
Other race week events include the Sawbill Winter Camping Village and the Red Lantern Party. More information at www.beargrease.com.
