Emerald Ash Borer in Minnesota
In 2009 the emerald ash borer was found in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood of St. Paul. This year it was found in the Prospect Park East River Road neighborhood of Minneapolis and the Upper Mississippi River Fish and Wildlife Area of Houston County.

Firewood Restriction in Effect
Minnesota DNR reminds campers that only firewood purchased at a state park or from a DNR-approved vendor may be brought onto any DNR-administered lands. This is to prevent the spread of forest pests, such as emerald ash borer (EAB), which can catch a ride to new locations.

Around Superior …in Homemade Kayaks
Lucas Will and Greg Petry are spending the summer paddling over 1,200 miles around the outer shoreline of Lake Superior. They will spend up to three months on this human powered expedition in nylon skinned, wooden framed sea kayaks which they built from scratch. The two will also be filming their entire journey for a feature adventure documentary following their circumnavigation. They have titled the project “Superior Dream.”

When the international best-selling children’s book Paddle-to-the-Sea was first published in 1941, it is unlikely the book’s Michigan-born author and illustrator Holling C. Holling imagined it would someday launch a $4.3 million destination theme park in the small town of Nipigon (pop. 1,752) on Lake Superior. But it did. Ten years in the making, the Paddle-to-the-Sea Park was officially opened this spring.
