You, too, can sail Superior.

Carriage House Charters is owned by Capt. Jerry Paulson who sails out of Harbor Cove Marina on Park Point on the “Aeolos,” a Beneteau 321. He typically runs a 4-hour guided tour. He sails from May through October and takes reservations through his website, www.carriagehousecharters.com. The site also has a calendar so you can see when he is available. Reservations can also be made by calling (218) 260-9595.

Sailboats, Inc., is currently chartering sailboats out of Barker’s Island in Superior and in Bayfield. The fleet in Thunder Bay is not available this summer because of the construction project at the marina there. Bare-boat charters (without a captain) are available for “Rainbow,” a C&C 30 docked at Barker’s Island throughout the summer. Amicus Adventure Sailing, based in the Knife River Marina, is a new venture for Capt. Mark Gordon and his wife, Katya. He’s been a captain for 15 years with lots of big-water experience under his belt. This will be the first year he will offer charters on the Amicus 11, a custom-built 40-foot, steel-hulled cutter. He will offer a variety of services, from two-hour sails to overnight trips or longer. This year he’ll focus on day sails and will offer them daily at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. He’ll also offer moonlight sails during the full moon as well as learn-to-sail cruising courses. Bluefin Bay in Tofte offers guided boat tours on “Avanti,” its 42-foot Beneteau sloop captained by Nathanael Kuenzli. The two-hour sails start the first weekend in July and are held Wednesday through Sundays at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Evening sails (from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.) are also held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. North House Folk School in Grand Marais offers a wide range of sailing opportunities on its gaff-rigged, steel-hulled sloop. Daily two-hour sails are offered from late May to early October as are sunset sails and moonlight sails. The Folk School also holds a sailing immersion class with course work and hands-on sailing. SailSuperior.com Yacht Charters and the Sleeping Giant Sailing School is based at the Thunder Bay Marina. Capt. Greg Heroux said the sailing school is one of his biggest draws. Sailors can learn how to sail a 36-footer and a 40-footer with up to seven-day excursions.
