Chris Gillis is back in town this weekend!
This versatile jazz pianist/trumpet player/vocalist/percussionist will be playing at Papa Charlie’s with the Gooneybirds on Friday and Saturday nights starting at 9:30 p.m. He’ll also play the Apres Ski Acoustic slot at Papa Charlie’s with bluesman Gordon Thorne (6:30- 9 p.m.) before the Saturday night show.
Then it’s on to the GunFlint Tavern on Sunday, where he’ll be jamming on drums and trumpet with the Sivertones. (Here’s a short clip of him playing with them at Sivertson Gallery last May. And another clip of the same event.)
Gillis is currently living in the Twin Cities where, he writes in his blog: “I’m holed up working on a new CD and also preparing to release a 3-CD set of the radio show I produced with WTIP Community Radio, “A Thread of Jazz Up North.” To listen to his great music, click here.

Pete Kavanaugh plays at the Poplar River Pub at Lutsen Resort tonight (Jan. 14). Then on Friday afternoon, James Moors plays Moguls at Caribou Highlands from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and the Timmy Haus Collective plays the GunFlint Tavern starting at 8:30 p.m.
Also on Saturday, Jan. 16, Michael Monroe hosts a Log Cabin Concert at his home starting at 7 p.m. For tickets and more info, call 387-2919.
This week, cellist Josh Aerie will perform solo at Bluefin Bay on Sunday, Jan. 17 from 7-9 p.m. Aerie is a nationally recognized cellist , recording artist and conductor, performing on film soundtracks, national tours and in orchestras and chamber ensembles across the country. The performance is free.
Also on Sunday, Jim Shinners will give a presentation “Lake Superior’s Most Spectacular Shipwreck” at Caribou Highlands in Lutsen at 7 p.m. Shinners is a sailor himself and has a deep interest in all things Lake Superior.
The “weekend” finishes out on Monday when the Sivertones play at Moondance Coffee in Lutsen at 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18. They’ll play at Bluefin Bay on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
Michael Monroe plays the Poplar River Pub at Lutsen Resort on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., Joe Paulik plays there next Thursday, Jan. 21.
In other art news, the Art Underground show at Betsy Bowen’s Studio continues through the end of the month with more than 40 local and regional artists represented as well as artists from Uganda.
When Betsy Bowen went to Uganda to work with a Ugandan printmaker, she met Ruth Nakalembe, a teenager who made paperbead necklaces from recycled paper to help pay for school. A new shipment of these beautiful necklaces are now at the gallery.
Bowen has just received new handmade paper-bead necklaces from Ruth Nakalembe, a Ugandan teenager who is making the beads to help pay for her education.
The 1910 Rock Shop has new handcrafted stacked stone candle holders, stone table runners and slate cheese boards with a handcrafted cheese knife. The gallery is also show several new birch tree paintings by Jim Miller.
Do you like to draw? The Thunder Bay Art Gallery is hosting a “Drawing Frenzy” on Sunday, Jan. 17 at the gallery in Thunder Bay, Ontario as part of “Big Boreal Adventure — Get Up and Go Thunder Bay.” Ten of the nature drawings produced at the event will be made into bronze plaques and placed a various sites in the city. Also this weekend at the gallery, Sheila Spence will present a photographic portrait workshop on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. She currently has an exhibit there entitled “Pictures of Me.”
Here in Grand Marais, Chef Judi Barsness will be teaching the second class in the series “ The Art of Julia and Chez Jude.” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. French County Luncheon will include a 3-course luncheon, paired with wine and recipes. Call 387-1756 or e-mail info@chezjude.com.
And while we’re on the topic of food art, Chef Tom Linderholm of Odyssey Resorts will be doing cooking demonstrations at Papa Charlie’s on Monday, Jan. 18 entitled “Wild Game with a Northwood’s Flair.” The demonstration is at 6 p.m. Watch for free, reservations required for the meal. Call 663-7800.
