Three days of slopes, three days of show — that’s how the band Wookiefoot describes what will be happening at Lutsen Mountains this weekend at Snowball 2010.
Wookiefoot, a high-energy “psychedelic circus” band and Heatbox, a one-man rapper from Minneapolis, headline the Saturday night show at Papa Charlie’s.
Other bands include Pert Near Sandstone & Trampled by Turtles on Thursday night, The Histronic & God Johnson on Friday night night. The Friday afternoon jam session is with The Limns and on Saturday with Jon Wayne.
In Grand Marais, the Pete Kavanaugh Group will be playing at the GunFlint Tavern on Friday and Saturday nights, Bump Blomberg will play acoustic sets at the Tavern on Sunday starting at 8:30 p.m.
The Birch Terrace Lounge has its weekly karaoke Thursday through Saturday nights.
Timmy Haus will also be playing this weekend at Caribou Highlands on Friday from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Classical music lovers get a nod this weekend too when Cellist Jon Aerie and Pianist Samuel Black perform at Bluefin Bay from 7-9 p.m. Sunday. The event is free.
And on Friday night on WTIP’s The Roadhouse with Bob Carter and Buck Bensen, Pete Kavanaugh and his group will be in the studio. The hosts will also interview Pat Maus at the University of Minnesota-Duluth Library about its current exhibition — “Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country,” and they will talk to Thomas Pink of Lake Superior State University about LSSU’s 2010 Banished Words list.
There’s lots of winter activities going on this weekend as well. Learn how to identify trees in winter at Sugarloaf Cove at 10 a.m. Saturday. The organization’s naturalist will lead you on a tour and give tips on how to tell what the tree is without its leaves.
Cascade Lodge will have a series of sleigh rides available for the public on Saturday at 6, 7:30 and 9 p.m. Call -663-7804 to reserve your place on the sled.
And then on Sunday, plan on attending the Sawtooth International Ski Race at Pincushion Mountain. This is always a great event with skiers coming from all over the region to compete in classical and freestyle races. The races start at 10 a.m.
In other art news,the Wednesday night Life Drawing Sessions at the Grand Marais Art Colony continue tonight (Wednesday) from 6:30-9 p.m .
And a number of classes will be held this this month including:
Neil Sherman’s Basic Drawing class, which started on Tuesday, but, if you really want to take this class, it is still possible to register. It is offered on Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. at the Art Colony.
Sharon Frykman will teach a Traditional Stained Glass Window class on Tuesday evenings, Jan. 12-Feb. 6.
Kelly Dupre is teaching a class on creativity using the book, “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. This is a 12-week class and will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30p.m. starting Jan. 12.
Also in January, “Valentine Ventures in Clay,” with Joan Farnam. This is a beginning class and/or open to anyone who wants to spend a month playing with clay. The class will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays starting Jan. 21. For more information, call 387-2737.
Also, the Art Colony and the Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church are collaborating on an exhibit of the Stations of the Cross, which will open March 21 at the Art Colony. Call Mary Ellen Ashcroft at: 387-1536 for more info. Submissions are due March 17.
For those long winter evenings, the Attic has a great selection of soy candles in different colors and fragrances.
The Grand Portage Gift Shop is featuring stunning and collectible birchbark, porcupine quill and sweetgrass boxes crafted by Shirley M, a Cree who lives in northern Canada.
That Little Red House has just received skeins of pure cashmere in a number of colors. Cashmere wool comes from the undercoats of the cashmere goat. The shop also has a good selection of Sundae, a bulkier wool, as well as a pattern book with a variety of choices.
Sivertson Gallery has just received two new original Nancy Seaton pieces, watercolors on vellum paper. The gallery also has new oil paintings by Ann Jenkins and a wide selection of handmade jewelry.
