Winter has arrived on the North Shore, as this photo taken by Don Davison proclaims --- ice on the harbor! Learn how to survive the cold at a special presentation at Sugarloaf Cove at 10 a.m. Saturday. Free.

The season’s art festivals might be over, but there’s still plenty happening in the art world this weekend.

First up is the Christmas play at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts put on by the Grand Marais

Playhouse. This year, the Playhouse has mounted a production of Disney’s “Cinderella” with more than 40 children from the community singing and dancing in this short play.

Performances are at 7 p.m. tonight and Friday night, 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at the door, $5 adults, $3 students.

Next weekend, ballet lovers can see the Minnesota Ballet’s

There are lots of art shows open this week, too.

The Quilt Show at the Johnson Heritage Post continues, with more than 150 quilted items on display. The Heritage Post is open from 1-4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

The Holiday Art Underground Show at Betsy Bowen’s Studio,  301 1st Ave. W in Grand Marais, continues, with hours from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

The Last Chance Gallery in Lutsen also has a wide variety of local and regional art, as well as sculpture by Tom Christiansen. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays through the holidays or by appointment.

Hovland woodturner Lou Pignolet is now exhibiting his work at the New Scenic Cafe on old Highway 61 just outside of Duluth.

Weavers and knitters are showing their work at the new Artisan Co-op, 1825 W. Highway 61, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this weekend. Check Raven’s Beak Design for more details.

For the wool lover in the family, Great Gifts of Lutsen has just received a new shipment of Northland Woolens Twice Baked items, which are crafted from felted and recycled patchwork wool. Also, Anna Hess will sign her children’s book, “Beaver, Bear and Snowshoe Hare” at the gift shop on Saturday from 2-5 p.m.

In Grand Marais, jewelry designers Gail Hedstrom and Valerie McFarlane will be at the Lake Superior Trading Post from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday to talk about and show their work.

Also that afternoon, Sivertson Gallery will host an Artists & Authors Meet & Greet from 1-3 p.m. Painters Neil Sherman and David Gilsvik,  landscape photographer Mark Tessier and printmaker Kelly Dupre will talk about their work.

Kah Nee Tah Gallery in Lutsen has a wide selection of handmade Christmas jewelry and ornaments as well Donna Best’s pottery with a pine-tree design.

In other art news, there will be a stained glass workshop at Epiphany Works located in the 1910 Rock Shop this Saturday. Katharine Peterson will be the instructor. To register and for more information, contact Cook County Community Education at 287-2000.

There are already results from a fused glass workshop being held at the Grand Marais Art Colony. Nancy Seaton, Kjersti Vick and Andrew Beavers are taking the class from Sharon Frykman.

Dave Seaton, who co-owns Hungry Jack Outfitters with Nancy, is working on a new guitar this winter using Madagascar rosewood for the back and sides, red spruce on top. It’s a smaller version than he normally makes, he said — a new challenge.

Wednesday Evening Life Drawing Sessions continue at the Art Colony on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Cost is $15  per session. No instruction is included.

Music this weekend should be great, as usual. The Pete K (Kavanaugh) Group plays at the GunFlint Tavern on Friday and Saturday nights. Music starts at 8:30 p.m. On Sunday, the Sivertones play at 6:30 p.m.

Trailer Trash plays at Papa Charlie’s on Friday and the White Iron Band plays on Saturday. Music begins at 9:30 p.m.

Max Bichel plays at the Pie Place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Rod N Real plays at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino on Saturday night starting at 9 p.m.
