This is a great weekend to listen to bluegrass music. Dobro master Rob Ickes is the featured musician this year for the Bluegrass Masters Weekend at Lutsen Resort.

Ickes has played with a number of famous bands, including the bluegrass super group, Blue Highway and has been named the Dobro Player of the Year nine times by the International Bluegrass Music Association for his innovative work on the resonator guitar.

The weekend begins tonight with a jam session in the lobby at the resort. Tomorrow (Saturday) there are workshops all day, and more jamming and then tomorrow night a fantastic concert with Ickes and last year’s Masters Weekend headliner, mandolin player Mike Compton. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and is open to the public. Tickets are $20 at the door, $15 for workshop participants.

In other art news, the Empty Bowls fundraiser for the Cook County Food Shelf was held Thursday night and was a resounding success. More than 250 showed up at the Congregational Church to pick out their favorite handmade bowl and then enjoy soup and bread donated by local restaurants and organizations. The final figures aren’t in yet, but at least $2,000 was raised for the Food Shelf in this annual fundraiser. The Silent Auction of bowls crafted by local and regional artisans was also a success. Check here for final results next week.
