Moose Madness weekend is Oct. 16-18.
This is one of the busier weekends in Grand Marais — Moose Madness Weekend.
There are all kinds of things to do and see. Today (Friday) from 2-4 p.m, families can make moose puppets at the Grand Marais Art Colony.
Saturday sees the kick-off of the Moose Word Scavenger Hunt at local shops from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Camp: A Trivia Game for all ages at the Lake Superior Trading Post ( 1o a.m.), Moose-a-Rama with the Muffin Man at Drury Lane Books (1-2 p.m.), a tour of North House Folk School (2-2:45 p.m.), Make a Moose Kite at East Bay Suites (2-4 p.m.), Phyllis Root will sign her book, “If You Want to See a Caribou,” at Drury Lane Books (5 p.m.) and the Mocha Moose Café & Poetry Salon at the Pie Place at 9 p.m.
The Moose Medallion hunt started at 8 a.m. this morning and continues until it is found.
A Moose Cartoon Contest (Cook County News-Herald), a Moose Poetry Contest (haiku or limerick) at Northern Wilds will be held with entries due by noon Sunday. There’s also a Moose Coloring Contest at Joynes through Saturday and a “There’s a heap of Moose” to count at 1910 Rock Shop through Saturday.
"I'm Old Enough to Face the Dawn," by Brandon Kuehn. He opens a show at the Johnson Heritage Post with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday night.
Also this weekend, landscape painter Brandon Kuehn will open an exhibit at the Johnson Heritage Post with a reception from 5-7 pm tonight, Oct. 16. Kuehn is a native Minnesotan who currently shows his work at Waters of Superior in Duluth. He studying for a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Art Institute of Boston and will graduate in 2010. He lives and works with his wife Julia in Arden Hills. The public is invited to the opening reception.
And, the “Make A Bowl for Empty Bowls” event continues with an open studio at the Grand Marais Art Colony tonight from 5-8 p.m. and Saturday from 2-5 p.m. The public is invited to come in and make a bowl. Potters in residence will be available to help if you’ve never done it before. The Art Colony is asking for a $5 donation to help cover costs.
For music this weekend, the Pete Kavanaugh Group is playing at the Gunflint Tavern on Friday and Saturday nights.
If you’re traveling to Thunder Bay, Ontario this weekend, the Blue Man Group will be at the Fort Williams Gardens on Saturday night. For more info and tickets, click here.

This is also the weekend to visit your favorite restaurants and galleries that will close for the winter either this weekend or soon after, and hours at other galleries change.
The Angry Trout closes this weekend, the Blue Moose next.
Last Chance Gallery in Lutsen begins its fall hours after this weekend. It will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., other days by chance or appointment. Tom Christiansen, gallery co-owner and sculptor, is working on big fish hinges for Todd Miller’s new building. Christiansen has interesting work on display at the gallery as well.
The Cross River Heritage Center closes this weekend to re-open for it’s holiday event.
Upcoming: The Grand Marais Playhouse Silent Auction Oct. 24 with special mini-performances of the upcoming season. The auction opens at 6 p.m.
