The North Shore Music Association's annual fundraiser includes a concert with Todd Green and a great Silent Auction.
The North Shore Music Association will hold its annual silent auction fundraiser on Saturday night, Oct. 10, at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts. The big event, which always draws a good crowd, features a great Silent Auction starting at 6 p.m. (refreshments available), followed by a fun concert. The auction will offer gift certificates from local businesses, including the Superior Trading Post, Buck’s Hardware, Joynes and Beth’s Fudge, to name a few, as well as lots of other items, The Silent Auction concludes at the end of the intermission.
This year, the Music Association is bringing in Todd Green for the fundraiser concert., Green is a virtuoso on an amazing number of instruments. He has traveled the world studying many musical traditions, and he brings this wealth of knowledge ot every concert, as well as many of his instruments.
On Thursday, he was the artist in residence at ISD 166 sharing his knowledge with students in the high school band and Middle School and Elementary School students.

Tickets for the concert are $15 adults, $12 are are available at tix.com or by calling 387-1284, ext. 3, or at the door. Plan on coming to this one … both to help support the North Shore Music Association and get some good deals at the same time! It’s also going to be a fun evening of music.
In other North Shore Music Association news, it has just received a grant for $1,800 from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council to bring Peter Ostroushko to the ACA Jan. 30. Ostroushko, who is based in the Twin Cities, is one of the top mandolin players in the state as well as a celebrated composer. Here’s a Web site which features video clips of his playing. The North Shore Community Band will play for the Second annual Swing Dance at the Hovland Town Hall from 7-11 p.m. In the first hour, there will be instruction on how to do the East Coast Swing dance. The dance begins at 8 p.m. The public is invited. Donations are welcome.
Also on Friday night, the band Number 2 will be at the GunFlint Tavern on Friday night, and the Bicycle Army acoustic duo on Saturday night. The music starts at 8:30 p.m.
The Sivertones round out the weekend of live music when they play at the Tavern starting at 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
Then on Monday night, the Erin Bode Trio will be at the Tavern.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, the Tim Styles Band will be in concert at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts for what will undoubtedly be an energetic and fun-filled concert. Stiles is a talented and popular Cook County High School graduate.
Holly Johnson Beaster helps a young potter throw a bowl at the Make-A-Bowl event at the Art Colony Wednesday.
In other news, 19 people showed up for the first Make-A-Bowl open studio at the Grand Marais Art Colony on Wednesday night. Earlier that afternoon, kids from the Stone Soup Gardeners youth gardening program made bowls, too. In all, 50 bowls were made that day, a great start for the 300 needed for the Food Shelf fundraiser Nov. 12. There will be lots of opportunities for the public to come in and make a bowl this month, including MEA weekend (Oct. 16 & 17) and a Paint A Bowl at the Art Colony Oct. 24. Kelly Dupre was interviewed on WDSE’s Venture North on Thursday night about the book she illustrated: Becoming a Boundary Waters Family. The book is available at local booksellers as well as at lodges on the Gunflint Trail.
Birchbark Books & Gifts in Grand Marais has William Kent Krueger’s latest book, “Heaven’s Keep,” as well as an anthology of suspense stories by Minnesota authors entitled “Once Upon A Crime.”
WTIP Community Radio has put a call out for hand-made items to be used for premiums during the Homegrown Radio pledge drive later this fall. Call 387-1070 for more information. The items are needed by the end of October.
Moose Madness weekend is Oct. 16-18.
