The 19th annual Grand Marais Art Festival begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. It runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The Grand Marais Art Festival is this weekend, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday. More than 50 artists will be setting up their tents in downtown Grand Marais for the event which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. There will be lots to see — Everything from paintings to pottery, prints to jewelry are featured in this fun festival with local and regional artists represented.
To add to the festive atmosphere, members of the Northwoods Fiber Guild will be giving demonstrations in front of the Johnson Heritage Post, where, coincidentally, guild members are exhibiting their work. Rugs, tapestries, quilts, hand-knitted sweaters — everything fiber — are featured here.
And for those who would like to have a hands-on art experience this weekend, come to the Grand Marais Art Colony from 9-11 a.m. Saturday and paint a rock. The event is part of the Saturday Community Art series at the colony. Cost is $5.
Then on Saturday night, come to the Art Colony after the booths have closed, meet the artists and paint a majolica tile. The tiles will be fired on Sautrday night and can be picked up on Sunday afternoon. Cost is $10.
Betsy Bowen has just completed this print of the Great Blue Heron and is currently printing a new Loon print.

The studio is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The town is hopping in other ways this weekend, too. The Playhouse is reprising the comedy “Blithe Spirit,” with an encore presentation this weekend, with shows at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts.
Harbor Friends will hold their event, “Everybody Needs a Rock,” for children and families on the Bear Tree Park beach at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Poet LuAnn Shephard Muhm will be reading from her book, “Breaking the Glass” at Drury Lane Books on Saturday from 5 -6;30 p.m. The public is invited.
Also, the Susan Cowsill Band performs on Saturday night at the ACA. The singer/songwriter’s performance begins at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at www.grandmaraisplayhouse.com or at the door.
Jeff Ray plays at the GunFlint Tavern on Friday night and the Chris Silver Group plays on Saturday night. Music starts at 9 p.m.
And last, but not least, Duluth potter Dave Lynas is at the Art Colony this week teaching a workshop entitled “Smorgasbord in Clay.” The students are learning to do lots of stuff, including making clay ocarinas. Here’s a quick video of what the finished product looks like and sounds like!
