Art gallery-goers have lots to experience this weekend  with the Hovland Group show at the Johnson Heritage Post, the Summer Art Underground Show at Betsy Bowen’s Studio and David Hahn’s watercolors at the Cross River Heritage Center

And Kathy Gray-Anderson and Bruce Johnson are both exhibiting their photographs of the North Shore at Java Moose.

Experience the art of living at the Small Footprint Living Fair at the Cook County Community Center this Saturday morning, June 13,  and watch  participants build a “green roof” and a water garden.

The “green roof” is over the children’s sand box at the Community Center and will be topped with soil and lots of different plants. They’re doing it in New York, why not in Grand Marais?

The water garden will also be constructed on Saturday morning near the Log Building at the Community Center and filled with plants. It’s a great chance to see how a water garden is constructed as well as learn about the plants that will survive in our northern temps. There are lots of other things to see at the fair, too.

If you want to create some art of your own, the first Saturday Morning Community Art session will be held at the Grand Marais Art Colony from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.  this Saturday, June 13. People will be making Lake Superior driftwood sculptures  — a fun event for all age groups. Cost is $5 a person. Open to the public.

Also on Saturday, the Farm & Craft Market opens at 9 a.m. in the Senior Center Parking lot, and the Classic Car Show begins at 10 a.m. in the parking lot on the Point. There will be a car parade around town at 2 p.m.

And Pete Kavanaugh will be performing on the Eight Broadway Stage behind the Eight Broadway Art Gallery starting at 1 p.m. He’ll also play at the Gunflint Tavern with his group on Saturday night.

Harbor Friends has just released its Family Coloring Book, which can be picked up at Harbor Center by the stage, a great way to learn more about the history of the Grand Marais harbor.

Little beavers! Flynn Theodore, 4, left, Lynden Blomberg, 8, and Hazel Ann Oberholtzer, 5, try out their beaver costumes for the Summer Solstice Pageant at North House Folk School June 20. Volunteers are still needed to help develop props and costumes for the show. Just turn up at the Old Playhouse on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The theme of the pageant this year is the Voyageurs, but, as you can see, beavers play an important role. The pageant starts at 8 p.m. June 20 at the Folk School.

Final preparations continue for the Summer Solstice Pageant at the Old Playhouse. Help make puppets and signs and costumes for this fun event. The Solstice Pageant is at North House Folk School at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 20. That weekend is also the Wooden Boat Show weekend at North House. See the Web site for more info.

The pageant workshop is from 10 to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. Everyone welcome.

Als0 this Saturday, Tim Cochrane, who has just published a book on Isle Royale, will be the guest at Drury Lane Books’ Salon at 5 p.m.

Then on Sunday, Celtic harpist Georgeann Hunter will play at the Cross River Heritage Center at 1:30 p.m. NPR’s Kathy Wurzer, who has just completed an award-winning book and video about Highway 61, will be the guest speaker at the Schroeder Area Historical Society’s annual meeting at 2 p.m. at the Heritage Center. The public is invited.
